An Arab, a Christian and a Jew Walk into a Bar

The Lampoon war has begun!

The Guardian reports that the Danish newspaper that published the incendiary cartoons of Mohammed passed on cartoons of Jesus three years ago, worrying that they'd inflame the readership. Fucking imbeciles. It's Islam, not Christianity, that has the major icon taboo!

In response to cartoons, Iran's best-selling newspaper has announced a Holocaust-cartoon contest. Fucking imbeciles. The Jews had nothing to do with this!

Well, as a PR exercise in making a point it is quite clever no? I find it interesting that when Ahmadinejad announced that he was going to have a conference on the holocaust (supposedly to determine whether it happened or not) there was uproar, and that in the parts of Europe where the cartoons have been published it is a criminal offence to deny the holocaust...either freedom of speech is for everyone or the same limitations apply to everyone. Seeing as though I think I am the best arbiter of what should be permissible and what is over the line and even I can't find the right line on this point, perhaps we should just say freedom to all.

In another attempt to prove a point, a Dutch/Belgian paper has published a cartoon showing Anne Frank in bed with Hitler.
There is a slight difference however, because anti-semitism or holocaust denials have nothing really to do with religion (it was never a concerted effort to bring Judaism into direpute) but rather a race - a race that was branded evil, scum etc during the Nazi era, whereas the Muslim cartoons are all about ridiculing a religion. Nevertheless, we have to look at the context here - let's not pull any punches, there is blatant and overt Islamaphobia in continental Europe, whether from the media, local politicians and the public - and such cartoons were, in my view, deliberately designed to hurt Muslims. Has any US newspaper published the cartoons by nay chance?
