We broke it, we own it. We broke it, we own it. We broke it, we own it. We broke it, we own it. We broke it, we own it. We broke it, we own it. We broke it, we own it. We broke it, we own it. That logic might work in the shops but in the real world, and is a good sentiment but I wonder whether it is a bit naive to expect the US to 'fix' Iraq when all they've shown themselves to be capable of is breaking it into a couple of pieces, breaking those pieces a bit more and lastly smashing it into a million different pieces. No-one can put that back together certainly not the ones who did it in the first place...

no, but "clear, hold and build" will do the trick - yeah like hell it will! Anyway, there is always Iran as an opportunity for the Americans to show they have learned the lessons from Iraq -

I agree, Bobby, and ideally the US wouldn't be involved. My point was just that our hands are really, really bloody.

As for Iran, don't worry, Manu- we're overextended. Though, hell, this country never fails to surprise.

Pooja, i hope you are right. Anyway, does anyone remember the ubiquitous Minister of Information for Iraq in Sadaam's cabinet - he was always seen on tele during the commencement of the invasion? He was the one source of humour in what was otherwise a very bleak and frightening moment in international law and international relations. Well, you may recall that after the toppling of Sadaam's government a series of websites sprang up dedicated to the Minister - in fact i remember reading a piece about Kuwaiti students who were lamenting the end of the war (oh how wrong he was) because it meant not being able to experience the minister in action - but anyway i am digressing - there is a point here -
in one particular comedy/news piece you had the minister giving a press conference with journalist encircling him like vultures where he was in insisting in contemptuous manner that the US forces would never make it to Baghdad - and in the background of the shot you could see US tanks and hummers on the bridge over the Tigris - very funny indeed
anyway, i mean to make an analagy to the present inane discussion over whether Iraq is in a state of civil war - you see front page news where Bush and that lying piece of shit Blair talk up the situation in Iraq, denying the existence of civil war, highlighting the democratic progress etc, when in a tandem news piece on the front page you a report that 20 iraqi civlians were executed by insurgents; police recruits bombed and on and on and on - it is bloody hilarious and ultimately very sad indeed. Alawi was right - with 50 or 60 people being killed each day if that is not civil war then what is.
The irony is , in my view, if the US and its cronies were to exit Iraq the violence would subside.
